Elon Musk might have the kind of fortune that makes almost any sports ownership dream sound possible, but James Dolan has made it clear the New York Knicks are not for sale.
The idea of Musk buying the Knicks has gained attention because of the scale of his wealth and the profile of the franchise.
But after New York ’s title run, Dolan’s position is simple: there is no obvious reason to sell a team that has only become more valuable. That message arrived with the Knicks at the strongest point of his ownership era.
Dolan addressed the possibility of selling the Knicks to Musk in comments shared by NBA Base on X , and his answer did not leave much room for speculation.
“No, I don’t think we’re going to sell the team. We’ve been at this for a long time and I’m gonna enjoy this team,” Dolan said.
He added, “The stock of the team has gone up dramatically in the last year and there’s really no reason for us to consider [selling the Knicks to Elon Musk].”
The verdict matters because Musk’s net worth has been reported as around $1.3 trillion, giving him a level of buying power few people in the world could match.
Even then, Dolan’s answer made clear that the issue is not whether a buyer could afford the Knicks. For Dolan, the timing points in the opposite direction.
