Costco announces 33 new warehouse stores in fiscal year 2027

Costco Wholesale Corp. said it will add 33 new warehouse stores in fiscal year 2027, a plan disclosed by chief financial officer Richard Vachris during the company’s 2026 earnings call. The new locations will be spread across the United States, with the first sites expected to break ground early next year and open by the end of 2027.

The expansion comes as Costco enjoys a rare surge in both sales and membership growth. In the last quarter, the retailer reported a 9 percent rise in comparable sales and a record 123 million active members worldwide. Consumers are gravitating toward bulk buying and discount pricing amid lingering inflation pressures. At the same time, competitors such as Amazon and Walmart are intensifying their own grocery and wholesale offerings, prompting Costco to lock in market share by widening its footprint.

Adding 33 warehouses will raise Costco’s global store count from roughly 826 to nearly 860, a 4 percent increase. The new sites are expected to focus on fast‑growing Sun Belt markets, including Texas, Florida, and Arizona, as well as secondary metros in the Midwest where the chain has few locations. Each store will create between 200 and 300 jobs, boosting local employment. Analysts at Morgan Stanley raised their price target on the stock, noting that the expansion could drive revenue growth of roughly $4 billion over the next two years. Shares rose 2.5 percent after the call.

Construction on the new warehouses will begin this year, pending local permits and land acquisition. Costco plans to use its standard 150,000‑square‑foot format, which includes a wide range of groceries, electronics, and private‑label Kirkland products. The rollout will test the retailer’s ability to scale its supply chain while maintaining low prices. If the stores open on schedule, Costco will finish the expansion before the 2028 fiscal year, reinforcing its position as the leading membership‑based warehouse club in the United States.
