A meter-long scorpion with massive pincers once roamed ancient Britain 415 million years ago, long before forests and the age of giant insects, according to new research.

The discovery challenges long-held assumptions about when and how arthropodsโ€”animals with exoskeletons like insects and scorpionsโ€”first grew to enormous sizes. Scientists previously believed giant arthropods emerged later, during the Carboniferous period, when high oxygen levels allowed insects to grow larger. But this scorpion, named *Gigantoscorpio willsi*, thrived in the Silurian period, over 100 million years earlier, suggesting other factors, like predator-free environments or abundant prey, may have driven their growth.

Fossil evidence shows *Gigantoscorpio willsi* had a thick exoskeleton and powerful pincers, possibly adapted for hunting fish or other early marine life. Its size and semi-aquatic lifestyle hint that some arthropods may have evolved giant forms in water before later conquering land. Researchers now plan to study its habitat and diet to understand how it survived in a world without forests or complex ecosystems.

This finding could rewrite the timeline of arthropod gigantism and offer clues about the evolutionary pressures that shaped early life on Earth. It also raises questions about whether other oversized ancient creatures remain undiscovered in Silurian-era fossils.
