Alanis Morissette has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, naming former tour manager Jonathan Todd Schwartz as the defendant. The complaint, filed on Tuesday, accuses Schwartz of orchestrating a โ€œcalculated blackmail campaignโ€ that aimed to damage Morissetteโ€™s reputation and career. She claims that the manager used threats and false information to pressure her into signing contracts that benefited Schwartz and harmed her professional standing.

The lawsuit follows a 2017 court ruling in which Schwartz admitted to embezzling more than $7โ€ฏmillion from Morissette and other highโ€‘profile clients. The case drew attention to the broader problem of financial exploitation in the music industry, where artists often rely on managers for bookings, promotion and financial oversight. Morissette, a threeโ€‘time Grammy winner known for her 1995 hit โ€œYou Oughta Know,โ€ has been a vocal advocate for artistsโ€™ rights, making the allegations particularly newsworthy.

In her filing, Morissette seeks compensatory and punitive damages totaling $12โ€ฏmillion, citing lost income, emotional distress and the cost of legal fees. The complaint alleges that Schwartz manipulated accounting records, forged documents, and threatened to release private photographs unless Morissette complied with his demands. A spokesperson for Morissette said the singer was โ€œdeeply hurtโ€ by the betrayal and that she is committed to protecting her creative freedom. Industry observers note that the case could set a precedent for stricter oversight of artist managers and increased transparency in financial dealings.

The court is scheduled to hold a preliminary hearing in early June, after which both parties will be asked to submit discovery. Morissetteโ€™s legal team plans to file additional evidence that will detail the extent of the alleged blackmail. If the case proceeds, it could force other artists to scrutinise their management teams more closely and may spur regulatory bodies to tighten licensing requirements for entertainment managers.
