The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay $800โ€ฏmillion to settle sexualโ€‘abuse claims brought by roughly 1,300 former students and parishioners, according to a statement from the archdiocese and reporting by NPR. The settlement, which still awaits a signed agreement, was confirmed by Jeff Anderson, whose firm represents more than 250 of the claimants. Archbishop Ronald Hicks said the deal would allow the church to focus again on its religious mission.

The settlement comes after years of lawsuits, investigations and public pressure over clergy abuse. In 2024, the Archdiocese of Losโ€ฏAngeles reached an $880โ€ฏmillion deal, setting a precedent for large payouts. The Newโ€ฏYork archdiocese entered mediation in December 2025 and announced plans to lay off staff and sell Manhattan properties to raise $300โ€ฏmillion toward the $800โ€ฏmillion obligation. The move reflects a broader effort by the Catholic hierarchy to address past misconduct and avoid further litigation.

Survivors expressed a mix of sorrow and relief after the agreement. Anderson said his clients felt โ€œa real sense of relief and achievementโ€ and hoped the settlement would protect future victims and clean up the archdiocese. Hicks wrote to priests that the settlement could bring โ€œsome measure of healing and reconciliation to all victimโ€‘survivors.โ€ The archdioceseโ€™s email emphasized a return to core ministries such as preaching, caring for the sick, and educating children.

The $800โ€ฏmillion payout is one of the largest in the churchโ€™s history and signals a shift toward financial accountability. The archdiocese must now secure the funds, likely through the planned property sales, and distribute them to claimants. Observers say the deal could set a benchmark for other dioceses facing similar lawsuits and may prompt further reforms in how the Catholic Church handles abuse allegations. The settlement also raises questions about the longโ€‘term financial health of the archdiocese and its ability to sustain charitable programs while meeting the compensation obligations.
