Iran has increased petrol prices for motorists as part of its ongoing struggle to manage declining revenues and maintain a costly subsidy system. The price adjustments were announced recently, with the first 60 litres of petrol remaining at 50,000 riyals (approximately $0.07) per litre. However, for those who consume more than 110 litres a month, the price will double to 100,000 riyals per litre. This marks the second increase in fuel prices since December, raising concerns about potential unrest.

The decision to raise prices comes amid significant economic challenges exacerbated by international sanctions and ongoing tensions with the United States. Iranian officials have been considering adjustments to fuel subsidies as they grapple with a severe economic downturn. The country has been consuming more oil than it produces, failing to reach pre-war production and export levels. The government hopes that by urging citizens to cut back on consumption, it can better align domestic demand with local supply.

In a recent address, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iranโ€™s parliament, emphasized the need for responsible fuel consumption. He acknowledged that part of the high consumption issue lies within the industrial sector, but he called on citizens to manage their gasoline use more effectively. Videos circulating on social media have shown long lines at petrol stations in Tehran, indicating that the energy crisis is deeply felt among the public.

This latest fuel price hike raises concerns about the potential for renewed protests. In 2019, significant antigovernment demonstrations erupted over fuel price increases, highlighting the sensitivity of such measures in a country already facing high inflation and a declining currency. As citizens navigate these economic challenges, the governmentโ€™s ability to manage public sentiment will be crucial in the coming months.
