Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Egypt for three days, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. This trip, his first to the Middle East in four years and first to Egypt in a decade, has sparked discussions about Egyptโ€™s delicate position between two superpowers: China, a key economic partner, and the United States, a crucial military ally.

Xi's visit comes amid heightened competition in the artificial intelligence sector. Chinese tech giant Huawei has submitted a proposal to construct AI data centers in Egypt, while the U.S. is reportedly preparing a counteroffer. The outcome of this bidding war could significantly influence Egyptโ€™s political and economic landscape, as the winning bid will foster closer ties with either China or the U.S.

Huawei's proposal includes supplying a substantial number of AI processors to establish two computing clusters. The infrastructure would support military and surveillance operations, marking a pivotal moment for Huawei as it seeks to export its Ascend AI processors for the first time. Meanwhile, U.S. tech giants like Nvidia and Microsoft are reportedly in talks to provide a competitive response, highlighting the stakes involved in this emerging tech battleground.

Egypt receives approximately $1.3 billion annually in U.S. military aid and has been strengthening its economic and military connections with China. As both nations vie for influence, experts suggest that China may hold an edge in Egypt due to its growing footprint in the region. The competition for data centers is not just about technology; it's a reflection of broader geopolitical strategies that could shape future global dynamics.
