Firefighters battled flames as protestors set cars and buildings ablaze in Paris and other French cities on Tuesday, marking the latest flareโ€‘up in a nationwide costโ€‘ofโ€‘living protest that has seen strikes, blockades and clashes with police since last month. The arson took place in the heart of the city and in several suburbs, drawing attention from the national media and sparking concern among residents who have already endured months of unrest. The incidents come at a time when the French government is under pressure to address a sharp rise in living costs.

The unrest follows the government's announcement of a 30โ€‘cent per litre petrol tax hike and a 1.5% increase in the VAT on food. Those changes are expected to cut the disposable income of the average French household by several hundred euros a year. Protesters argue that the tax policy is unfair, especially as wages have stagnated and public services such as healthcare and education are under strain. The demonstrations are part of a broader wave of discontent that began after the government announced a new economic stimulus package last week.

Police said 15 cars were set on fire in Paris, and two apartment blocks in Lyon and Marseille were damaged. Seven people were arrested for arson, while 20 others were detained on suspicion of property damage. The Interior Ministry called the incidents โ€œunacceptableโ€ and promised a swift investigation. The mayor of Paris urged calm and called for a national dialogue. The police have increased patrols in key districts and are monitoring social media for potential flashpoints.

The government has scheduled a meeting with opposition leaders next week to discuss a new economic stimulus package that could include tax cuts and subsidies. Meanwhile, the unions have warned that strikes could spread to public transport and the rail network, potentially disrupting the economy further. Analysts say the protests could pressure the government to rethink the tax policy and cut subsidies, but critics fear it may deepen social tensions and erode confidence in the state.
