Mayor Andy Burnham urged Britons on Tuesday to keep a threeโ€‘day supply of tinned food and bottled water at home, saying the advice is a sensible step against โ€œunexpected eventsโ€ that are becoming more frequent. He made the comment during a BBC Radio 5 Live interview, while the country battles a series of severe storms that have left parts of Cornwall without power.

The call comes as the UK faces a perfect storm of threats. Recent weather warnings have highlighted the risk of flooding and power outages, while a major security flaw exposed online systems to disruption. The National Audit Office warned last month that the nationโ€™s food supply chain is vulnerable to cyberโ€‘attacks and climateโ€‘driven shocks, and the Cold Chain Federation warned that Russian hackers are targeting pinch points in temperatureโ€‘controlled food logistics. Defra has been criticised for not strengthening supplyโ€‘chain resilience in recent years, prompting officials to stress personal preparedness.

Burnham outlined the governmentโ€™s basic checklist: three daysโ€™ worth of bottled water, a variety of tinned meals such as baked beans, soup and custard, and even snack items like Twiglets. He dismissed the idea of panic, insisting the measures are about โ€œhaving enough in the house to tide you overโ€ in a crisis. Labourโ€™s housing secretary, Angela Rayner, added a lighter note at the party conference, joking that her emergency box would also contain a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, mascara and a tin of custard. Burnham agreed that while wine might lift spirits, the essentials remain nonโ€‘perishable food and water.

The mayor said the conversation about household resilience will continue, especially as climate change fuels more extreme weather and cyber threats loom larger. Officials plan to roll out publicโ€‘information campaigns and may consider updating guidance on emergency kits. For now, the message to households is clear: stock the basics, stay informed, and be ready for the next surprise the UK faces.
