Canada has implemented retaliatory tariffs on nearly $20 billion worth of imports from the United States, escalating an ongoing trade dispute. The tariffs, which range from 15 percent to 50 percent, took effect at 12:01 AM ET on Tuesday and target a wide array of American products, including steel, household appliances, agricultural equipment, and dairy products.

This move comes in response to US President Donald Trump's earlier announcement of 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, which he claimed were subjected to "discriminatory treatment." The tariffs were part of a broader effort to renegotiate trade terms between the two countries. Despite talks in August, no resolution was reached before the deadline set by Trump. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that these tariffs are intended to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses from the US measures.

The Canadian government stated that the new tariffs would affect more than 700 products. To cushion the impact of these tariffs, Canada is also rolling out a support package worth $5.42 billion aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. The tariffs could significantly impact US automakers, as Canada is the largest market for US-manufactured cars. Additionally, American consumers may soon see price increases on around 550 consumer goods imported from Canada. A report from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy highlighted that US importers and consumers absorb 96 percent of the tariff burden, suggesting that the financial ramifications will largely fall on American shoulders.

As the trade dispute continues, tensions between the two neighboring countries remain high. Trump's recent threats against Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier, including blocking its sales in the US unless production shifts to America, further complicate the situation. The ongoing tariffs and trade negotiations will likely shape economic relations in the region for the foreseeable future.
