Global temperatures will likely break past the 1.5°C warming limit set in the Paris Agreement within the next few years, a new United Nations report warns. The UN Environment Programme’s “Limiting Overshoot” report says the planet is on track to overshoot the target before temperatures can be pulled back down later this century. That overshoot could last for decades, pushing heatwaves, floods and ecosystem collapse beyond what societies can safely handle.

The drift toward overshoot is the result of three decades of rising fossil fuel use. Even though wind, solar and electric cars are growing fast, coal, oil and gas still supply about 80% of the world’s energy. Global emissions hit a record 36.8 billion tons last year, and current national climate pledges do not cut emissions fast enough to meet the 1.5°C goal. Scientists say every ton of CO₂ that isn’t cut now makes the overshoot worse, increasing the risk of irreversible changes such as the loss of coral reefs and the collapse of ice sheets.

The report sets out a clear path: slash emissions by 42% this decade, double clean energy investment to $4.5 trillion per year, and protect forests and soils that absorb carbon. It also warns that overshoot will require “transformational adaptation” to protect people and economies. Cities near coasts will need stronger sea walls, farmers will have to switch crops, and health systems must prepare for more heat-related deaths.

If the world misses the 1.5°C window, temperatures could peak near 2°C by mid-century before slowly declining. That would lock in severe impacts: extreme weather will become more frequent, food supplies more unstable, and millions more people will face displacement. The report makes one thing plain: the next ten years will decide whether overshoot is a short, painful bump on the road to recovery—or a long, destabilizing slide into a hotter, more dangerous planet.
