Rob Sand wins Iowa governor's race, ending GOP's decade-long control

Democrat Rob Sand has won the Iowa governor's race, defeating Republican businessman Zach Lahn. This election marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape, as Sand is the first Democrat to hold the office since Chet Culver in 2006. His victory comes after Republicans maintained control of the governorship since 2011. Sand will replace outgoing Governor Kim Reynolds, who chose not to run for a third term.
Sand's win is notable as Iowa has increasingly leaned Republican in recent years. In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump won the state by over 13 percentage points and endorsed Lahn for governor. Despite this trend, Sand, 44, has carved out a unique position within the Democratic Party. As the state auditor, he has focused on issues of accountability and cooperation between parties. His campaign emphasized investing in public schools and expanding healthcare access, while he criticized the state's education savings account program that helps families pay for private school tuition.
The campaign was costly, with both candidates spending more than $46 million in total. Sand accounted for approximately $29 million of that spending, while Lahn raised slightly more, thanks in part to substantial contributions from the Republican Governors Association. Both candidates addressed pressing issues, including water quality and Iowa's high cancer rates, with the state having the second-highest new cancer diagnosis rate in the nation.
Sand will take office in January, but his agenda may face challenges as the Iowa Legislature remains under Republican control. The GOP holds majorities in both the Iowa House and Senate, which could complicate efforts to implement his proposed policies. Sand's ability to navigate this political landscape will be critical as he seeks to fulfill campaign promises and address the needs of Iowans.
