Wayne Davies, a 40โ€‘yearโ€‘old runner from Newtown in Powys, Wales, told the BBC that his fitness obsession spiralled into severe anxiety and sleep deprivation, prompting him to seek help from NHS Wales in early 2024. Davies said the pressure to improve race times, track training data and compare himself with other runners on social media left him โ€œconstantly worryingโ€ and feeling like โ€œthe rug was being pulled from under my feet.โ€ After a heart scare that revealed atrial fibrillation, he realised his running had become an addiction and was signposted to the Powysโ€‘based charity Ponthafren for support.

The story comes as mentalโ€‘health professionals note a rise in online searches for โ€œfitness addiction,โ€ reflecting broader societal conversations about compulsive exercise. Experts say the pandemicโ€™s lockdowns and the surge in wearable technology have amplified the urge to log miles, calories and performance metrics, turning healthy habits into obsessive routines for some. Davies, who began with casual jogs a decade ago, quickly moved on to marathons and ultraโ€‘distance events such as a 75โ€‘mile loop around the Llลทn Peninsula, chasing longer distances and faster times without ever feeling satisfied.

Daviesโ€™ struggle intensified after doctors diagnosed him with atrial fibrillation following a training run. Although treatment allowed him to return to running, the fear of another episode kept him glued to his smartwatch, obsessively monitoring data. Encouraged by friends and family, he consulted his GP, who referred him to NHS Walesโ€™s SilverCloud Space from Anxiety programme. Over a 12โ€‘week online course, Davies learned to manage intrusive thoughts, reduce dataโ€‘driven anxiety and listen to his body rather than the numbers. He now uses his watch only as a loose guide, saying he โ€œaccepts the data for what it isโ€ and runs based on how he feels each day.

Daviesโ€™ experience highlights a growing need for mentalโ€‘health resources tailored to athletes and fitness enthusiasts. The NHS Wales programme, which combines cognitiveโ€‘behavioural techniques with digital support, could become a model for addressing similar cases nationwide. As more people speak openly about the darker side of relentless training, health services and sporting organisations may need to develop clearer guidelines to help individuals balance ambition with wellbeing, preventing anxiety, sleep loss and potential health crises.
