Scientists may have detected long-sought dark matter using a new detector 1.5 miles below Italyโ€™s Gran Sasso mountain. A team reports signs of a rare interaction that could reveal the invisible particles making up about 27% of the universe. The observation, if confirmed, would mark a breakthrough after decades of searching.

The experiment, named Xenon1T, uses ultra-pure liquid xenon in a tank shielded from cosmic rays. Tiny flashes of light and charge, recorded over two years, hint at collisions between xenon atoms and hypothetical dark matter particles called WIMPs. While other detectors have claimed hints before, none have held up under scrutiny. โ€œThis is the most promising signal weโ€™ve ever seen,โ€ said Elena Aprile of Columbia University, who leads the collaboration.

The team found 285 events over background noiseโ€”about 53 more than expected. The excess could come from radioactive contamination or solar neutrinos, but it also matches predictions for WIMPs weighing a few times the mass of a proton. Physicists caution itโ€™s not proof yet. โ€œWe need to confirm it with more data,โ€ said Luca Grandi of the University of Chicago. A next-generation detector, Xenonnt, is being built to test the finding.

If real, this signal would solve one of physicsโ€™ biggest mysteries: what holds galaxies together. Stars move too fast to be explained by visible matter alone. Dark matterโ€™s gravity is the leading explanation, but no one has caught it in the actโ€”until now. Confirmation would rewrite textbooks and open a new era of discovery. The worldโ€™s most sensitive detectors, including Xenonnt and LUX-ZEPLIN in the U.S., are racing to replicate the result. The answer could come within months.
