Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is heading for a direct confrontation with Senate Republicans as frustration mounts over his leadership, with senior lawmakers questioning high staff turnover, the absence of a viable exit strategy for the Iran conflict, and the administrationโ€™s failure to court Democratic support for critical defense funding.

The tensions reflect broader unease within the GOP over the Pentagonโ€™s direction under Hegseth, a former Fox News contributor and Afghanistan veteran tapped by the president last year. His tenure has been marked by rapid departures of top officials, including three undersecretaries in six months, and a perceived lack of transparency with Congress. The Iran war, now in its third year, has stretched resources thin, and lawmakers see no clear path to de-escalation despite repeated requests for a strategy. Meanwhile, a $85 billion supplemental funding request for defense and Ukraine aid is stalled, partly because Hegsethโ€™s team has not engaged key Democrats who could help secure votes.

Senate Armed Services Committee members, including Republicans like Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Mitt Romney of Utah, have publicly criticized Hegsethโ€™s management, while others have privately expressed concerns about his political approach. โ€œWe need a secretary who works with Congress, not around it,โ€ one GOP aide said. The White House has defended Hegseth, citing his efforts to modernize the military, but the growing backlash suggests his confirmation for a full termโ€”currently pendingโ€”could face serious opposition.

If the rift deepens, it could jeopardize critical defense priorities, from Ukraine funding to military nominations, and leave the Pentagon without stable leadership amid global instability. Hegseth is expected to testify before the Senate next month, where he will likely face tough questions about his plans for Iran and his ability to unite a fractured Congress behind the administrationโ€™s agenda.
