Chancellor Johnโ€ฏHealey will present his first Budget on Wednesday, a moment that the BBC is using to hear directly from people on low incomes about what they need most from government spending and tax policy. The Treasuryโ€™s spring statement comes at a time when borrowing costs have hit historic highs, and the public is watching closely for any relief for households earning just a few thousand pounds a year.

Unlike previous years, few details of the Budget have leaked, leaving the tax and spending plans under intense scrutiny. Analysts say the government must balance the pressure to curb a soaring debt bill with the demand for targeted support for young jobโ€‘seekers and workers hit by rising living costs. The BBCโ€™s โ€œYour Voiceโ€ series has been gathering opinions from a crossโ€‘section of earners, from recent school leavers to seasoned drivers, to gauge the priorities that could shape the upcoming fiscal package.

Emilyโ€ฏNelson, a 19โ€‘yearโ€‘old from Swindon who left school with Aโ€‘levels but has struggled to find work, says she needs more governmentโ€‘funded jobs and training. She urges the extension of the Jobs Guarantee scheme, which currently offers sixโ€‘month paid placements to 18โ€‘24โ€‘yearโ€‘olds on universal credit after 18โ€ฏmonths of jobโ€‘searching, and argues eligibility should be cut to one year. Meanwhile, 48โ€‘yearโ€‘old driver Daveโ€ฏHerbert from Ynysddu, who spends about ยฃ350 a month on fuel for a 62โ€‘mile daily commute, calls for an immediate cut or temporary suspension of fuel duty. He argues that the rate, frozen at 57.95โ€ฏpence per litre since 2011, still feels like a tax burden as fuel prices have risen 40โ€‘50โ€ฏpercent this year, squeezing his familyโ€™s tight budget.

The Budget will reveal whether the Treasury will heed these calls. Observers expect a modest rise in the national minimum wage, but the increase will not apply to 18โ€‘20โ€‘yearโ€‘olds, a point that could affect young workers like Emily. If the government decides to keep fuel duty frozen, critics say it offers no real relief for drivers like Dave. The decisions made on Wednesday will shape the financial outlook for millions of lowโ€‘income Britons and could set the tone for fiscal policy as borrowing costs remain at record levels.
