The current and former leaders of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have condemned recent efforts to isolate the institution diplomatically, calling them a threat to the international legal order. In a joint op-ed published on Thursday, Paivi Kaukoranta, the ICC's current president, along with seven former presidents, highlighted how pressure from the Trump administration has targeted the ICC, urging countries to withdraw from the Rome Statute or to adopt measures that would undermine its authority.

The statement comes in the context of escalating tensions between the United States and the ICC. The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on ICC judges and officials and has actively pressed other countries to distance themselves from the court. This pressure coincided with the ICC's investigations into potential war crimes involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and allegations against US personnel, both of which have drawn significant opposition from Washington.

In their op-ed, the ICC leaders emphasized that the court is not an infringement on national sovereignty but rather a collaborative effort among nations to establish accountability for serious crimes like genocide and war crimes. They argued that international treaties do not diminish state sovereignty; instead, they reflect a collective commitment to uphold justice. The authors warned that if political power dictates the application of international law, it could lead to a dangerous world where might makes right.

The ICC's leaders called upon its 125 member states, as well as regional and international organizations, to stand firm against any attempts to weaken the court. They stressed the importance of strengthening institutions that uphold international law, stating, "Now is the time to strengthen the institutions that uphold international law, not dismantle them." As the geopolitical landscape shifts, their plea highlights the critical need for robust international cooperation in the face of growing challenges to global justice mechanisms.
