Indonesian authorities rescued an orangutan mother and her infant from a wildfire that had spread through their forest home on Saturday, marking the second such rescue in the region this week. The animals were found near the village of Sungai Kembang in West Kalimantan, close to the edge of the Tanjung Puting National Park, and were transported to a wildlife rehabilitation centre for treatment and monitoring.

The rescue underscores the mounting pressure on Indonesiaโ€™s remaining tropical forests. Orangutans, the only great apes native to Borneo, are classified as critically endangered, with fewer than 10,000 individuals left in the wild. The countryโ€™s forests have been increasingly vulnerable to fires caused by slashโ€‘andโ€‘burn agriculture, illegal logging and prolonged dry seasons linked to climate change. In 2023 alone, Indonesia recorded more than 30,000 hectares of forest burned, a sharp rise from previous years. The fires not only destroy trees but also the dense understory that provides food and shelter for orangutans and countless other species.

Forest rangers from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, supported by local volunteers, located the animals after a helicopter spotter reported smoke in the area. The mother and infant were in good health, but had been displaced from their usual habitat. Officials said the rescue was possible because a fire ban had been imposed earlier in the week, limiting the spread of flames. Conservation groups such as the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation praised the swift action and called for expanded fireโ€‘break protocols and better enforcement of existing regulations. They noted that each rescued individual is a critical genetic contribution to a population that is already fragmented.

The rescued orangutans will receive veterinary care and nutritional support at the rehabilitation centre before being released back into a protected habitat, if they survive. The incident has prompted the Ministry to announce plans to increase forest patrols, invest in earlyโ€‘warning satellite systems, and collaborate with local farmers to promote sustainable landโ€‘use practices. By addressing the root causes of forest fires, Indonesia aims to protect not only orangutans but also the broader ecological network that sustains millions of people across the island.
