Apple enhances Mail app search with machine learning in iOS 27 update.
iOS 27 will introduce a significantly improved Mail app search feature that uses machine learning to deliver relevant results and supports natural language queries. This upgrade addresses long-standiโฆ
Apple announced at its June 10 Worldwide Developers Conference that iOSโฏ27 will ship with a revamped Mail app featuring a โsearch that just works,โ a longโawaited upgrade that many users have demanded for years. The new search is set to roll out to the public with the iOSโฏ27 release slated for later this fall, and it will be available on all iPhone and iPad models that support the update.
The change matters because Appleโs Mail search has been a sore spot since the appโs debut. Users have complained that the tool often returns irrelevant results, misses recent messages, and fails to index attachments reliably. In a 2023 user survey, 68โฏpercent of respondents said Mail search was โpoorโ or โneeds improvement.โ The issue has grown as more people rely on email for work and personal communication, especially after the pandemic pushed remote collaboration to the forefront. Competitors such as Gmail and Outlook have long offered robust, AIโenhanced search, putting pressure on Apple to catch up.
iOSโฏ27โs Mail search uses onโdevice machineโlearning models to index the entire mailbox, including subject lines, body text, and common file types, within minutes of receiving new mail. The system supports naturalโlanguage queries like โemails from Sarah last week about the budgetโ and can surface results instantly, even when offline. Apple says the new engine reduces search latency by up to 80โฏpercent compared to iOSโฏ16. Early beta testers reported that the feature โfinds what I need on the first tryโ and praised the inclusion of attachment previews in results. The upgrade also ties into Spotlight, allowing users to search mail from the home screen without opening the app.
Apple will begin rolling the iOSโฏ27 beta to developers next week, with a public beta expected in August. The company plans to push the update to all supported devices automatically in October. Analysts expect the improvement to boost Mailโs usage and keep iPhone users from switching to thirdโparty email clients. If the search lives up to the hype, it could become a key selling point for the next generation of iPhones and iPads.
