Israeli forces raided the Jenin home of Palestinian journalist Ali al‑Samoudi on Thursday, beating his 16‑year‑old son and ordering the reporter to turn himself in. The raid followed a year‑long detention without charge, during which Samoudi said he endured torture, severe weight loss and other mistreatment.

Samoudi, a veteran of Al Jazeera’s Middle East bureau, has covered clashes in the West Bank and Gaza for more than a decade. His reporting has drawn frequent scrutiny from Israeli security forces, who accuse him of leaking confidential information. The year‑long hold, which began in 2022, was part of a broader crackdown on journalists in the occupied territories, a tactic used by Israel to curb independent coverage of its military operations. Human rights groups say the detention was illegal under international law.

The raid on Samoudi’s house was reported by local activists who said the soldiers entered without a warrant, seized his laptop and threatened him with arrest. His son, who was present, was struck by a soldier’s baton and left with bruises. Israeli officials denied that the soldiers had acted unlawfully, claiming the raid was a routine check on a suspect who had “failed to cooperate” with authorities. The Palestinian Authority condemned the raid as “another example of the continued harassment of journalists” and called for an investigation.

If Samoudi turns himself in, he could face a military court trial on charges that are not yet public. International media watchdogs have called for his release, arguing that his detention violates both Israeli and international law. The incident has already sparked protests in Jenin and online campaigns demanding press freedom. The United Nations has urged Israel to respect the rights of journalists and to end the practice of detaining them without charges. The outcome will likely influence the broader debate over freedom of expression in the occupied West Bank and could set a precedent for how Israel treats media workers in the future.
