Jamie Raskin advocates for Trump impeachment if Democrats regain House control

Rep. Jamie Raskin supports impeaching Trump again if Democrats win the House, calling it a critical tool. This strategy aims to hold Trump accountable for alleged misconduct, though Raskin warns it wโ€ฆ

Jamie Raskin says impeaching Trump again โ€˜not a taboo with usโ€™ but โ€˜not a panaceaโ€™

Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, told NBCโ€™s Meetโ€ฏtheโ€ฏPress that President Trump has โ€œundoubtedlyโ€ committed impeachable acts in his second term. Raskin said a third impeachment could be a โ€œcritical tool in the toolboxโ€ for Democrats if they regain control of the House, but he warned it would not solve all the problems.

Trump was impeached twice in the first term of his presidency. The first impeachment in 2019 charged him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and he was acquitted by the Senate. The second impeachment in 2021 accused him of incitement of the Januaryโ€ฏ6 riot; again he was acquitted. Now, after a 2023 election that returned him to the White House, Trump faces new legal battlesโ€”indictments in New York and federal fraud charges in Floridaโ€”alongside the lingering fallout from the Capitol attack. Raskinโ€™s comments come as Democrats are preparing for the 2024 midโ€‘term elections, where they hope to flip the House and use the impeachment process to hold Trump accountable for his conduct.

The House has a Republican majority at present, so any impeachment effort would first need a change in control. If Democrats win, they would need to draft articles of impeachment, gather a majority of votes, and send the case to the Senate for trial. Raskinโ€™s remarks were met with sharp rebuke from Republican leaders, who say impeachment is a political weapon that should not be used again. Trumpโ€™s legal team has called the accusations โ€œpolitically motivatedโ€ and dismissed them as โ€œfalse.โ€ The debate over a third impeachment reflects a broader struggle over the legacy of Trump, the rule of law, and the future of American politics.

If a new impeachment motion passes, it could influence public opinion ahead of the 2026 election cycle and set a precedent for how the Constitution handles former presidents. It could also shape the narrative of the upcoming elections, with Democrats arguing that Trumpโ€™s conduct threatens democratic norms, while Republicans claim that the impeachment process is being weaponised. The next months will see whether the House flips, how the impeachment debate unfolds, and whether Trumpโ€™s conduct will be judged again in Congress.
