Jim Cramer warned investors on Thursday that they are punishing the wrong tech stocks after a string of disappointing earnings reports, a view that came as the Dow and S&P 500 each slipped 0.4% and the Nasdaq fell 1.4% following a threeโ€‘day rally. Cramer, host of CNBCโ€™s โ€œMad Money,โ€ said the marketโ€™s kneeโ€‘jerk selling of companies that share a sector with a weak performer is misguided and creates buying opportunities for those with stronger fundamentals.

The comment came amid a busy earnings season that has left traders scrambling to interpret mixed results. Many tech firms posted solid numbers, but a handful of laggards dragged down broader indexes. Cramer argued that investors are too quick to apply a โ€œguiltโ€‘byโ€‘associationโ€ lens, treating a single companyโ€™s miss as a signal of industryโ€‘wide weakness. He urged viewers to โ€œdo the homeworkโ€ and focus on each businessโ€™s unique strengths rather than reacting to headline headlines.

Cramer highlighted cybersecurity as a case in point. Fortinetโ€™s underwhelming quarterly report on Wednesday pulled down shares of rivals Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike, even though both offer broader security platforms than Fortinetโ€™s hardwareโ€‘centric approach. He noted that Fortinet is losing market share, but that does not indicate a slowdown in overall demand for cybersecurity services. A similar pattern emerged in enterprise software, where ServiceNowโ€™s modest earnings disappointment weighed on Workday and Salesforce, despite their distinct product lines. Cramer also cited Alphabetโ€™s earnings miss that hurt Microsoft, and Samsungโ€™s cautious outlook that pressured Micron, even though Micronโ€™s highโ€‘bandwidth memory business remains stronger. He called many of these โ€œguilty verdictsโ€ absurd and suggested they present buying opportunities.

Looking ahead, Cramerโ€™s own charitable trust holds shares of the companies he says are being unfairly punished, including Palo Alto, CrowdStrike, Salesforce, Google and Microsoft. He believes the market will correct these mispricings as investors reassess the fundamentals of each firm. Analysts say the warning could temper some of the sellโ€‘offs and encourage a more nuanced approach to tech investing as the earnings season continues.
