Spain winger Lamine Yamal is fit and ready to come off the bench in his sideโs opening World Cup game, but manager Luis de la Fuente says that his introduction will depend on how the Group H match with Cape Verde progresses.
โThe good news is that Lamine is very fit,โ de la Fuente told reporters on Sunday.
Yamal has not played since April, with the 18-year-old struggling with groin issues and a hamstring injury. He missed Spainโs recent friendlies, but his coach has no concerns over his fitness. The situation is the same for Nico Williams and Victor Munoz.
โHeโs following the set process, and heโs in good shape. Heโs training very well, just like his other colleagues who had some sort of injury,โ de la Fuente said.
โTheyโre all available, but they wonโt be able to play from the start of the match. Weโll have to wait and see how the game progresses, and then weโll make a decision on how they can contribute to the team.
โItโs a matter of logic, of how the game is evolving, the game situation.โ
Spain, the European champions and World Cup winners in 2010, go into the tournament as one of the strong favourites to lift the trophy, but de la Fuente will not be taking Cape Verde for granted in their World Cup debut.
โIf you havenโt watched them play yet, youโll see tomorrow,โ he said.
