A 45โ€‘yearโ€‘old man pleaded guilty Tuesday to strangling 75โ€‘yearโ€‘old realtor Linda H. Miller in the basement of her home in Muncie, Indiana, and leaving her body there. Prosecutors say Miller was found dead on Marchโ€ฏ12 after a neighbor reported a foul smell. The suspect, identified as James T. Carter, admitted to the killing during a closedโ€‘court hearing at the Madison County Circuit Court. He faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Miller was a longโ€‘time resident of the neighborhood and a wellโ€‘known realโ€‘estate agent who helped seniors downsize their homes. Her murder shocked the community because it highlighted the growing risk of violence against older adults. Elderโ€‘abuse advocates note that Indiana has seen a 15โ€ฏpercent rise in violent crimes targeting people over 65 in the past five years. The case also raised concerns about safety in homeโ€‘based businesses, where agents often work alone and may be vulnerable to assault.

Carterโ€™s guilty plea came after investigators linked him to the crime through DNA evidence found on a rope used in the strangulation. He told the court he acted in a โ€œmoment of angerโ€ after a dispute over a property sale. The Madison County prosecutor, Jeff Daniels, called the plea a โ€œmeasure of justiceโ€ for Millerโ€™s family and said the sentencing hearing is set for Dec.โ€ฏ5. Millerโ€™s daughter, Karen, released a brief statement expressing relief that the case would move forward but urged lawmakers to strengthen protections for seniors. The upcoming sentencing will determine whether Carter receives life without parole, a sentence that would keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.
