Argentine director Celina Murga will unveil *The Rehearsals* (*Los Ensayos*) at the upcoming San Sebastián Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, marking her return to narrative filmmaking after a decade focused on documentary work. The project joins 15 others selected for the forum’s 2024 slate, a key networking hub for filmmakers seeking European and Latin American financing. Murga, whose early films earned praise from Hollywood heavyweights including Martin Scorsese, has spent recent years expanding into documentary and educational projects, but *The Rehearsals* signals a pivot back to fiction.

The film centers on a group of actors preparing for a play in a Buenos Aires theater, exploring themes of performance, memory, and artistic collaboration. Murga’s earlier fiction films—such as *The Freshly Cut Grass* (2010) and *The Third Side of the River* (2014)—were noted for their understated realism and psychological depth, often drawing from Argentina’s social landscape. Scorsese, who executive produced *The Freshly Cut Grass* through his Sikelia Productions, has long championed Murga’s work, seeing in her a distinctive voice blending local stories with universal themes.

Murga’s transition to *The Rehearsals* follows years of documentary work, including *That Never Happened* (2018), a film about Argentina’s 1976–1983 dictatorship through the eyes of a desaparecido’s family. Her shift back to narrative film reflects both artistic reinvention and industry shifts, as Argentine cinema faces funding challenges and a push for more international co-productions. The San Sebastián forum, now in its 14th year, has become a critical stop for filmmakers seeking European partners, with a strong track record of shepherding projects to festivals and distribution.

*The Rehearsals* arrives at a moment when Latin American cinema is reclaiming global attention, from the rise of streaming platforms to the resurgence of auteur-driven storytelling. Murga’s participation in San Sebastián underscores her standing as a bridge between Argentina’s art-house tradition and the broader European market. If the film secures financing, it could reaffirm her place in the region’s new wave of directors, while offering audiences a rare look at the raw mechanics of performance and creation.
