A Missouri state House candidate has been accused of directing his campaign manager to plant cocaine and Adderall in the car of a political opponent, according to court documents unsealed this week.

The allegations involve Aaron Kelley, a Republican running in a primary for a seat representing part of the Kansas City area. Authorities say Kelleyโ€™s campaign manager, Joshua D. Campbell, told investigators that Kelley wanted the drugs planted to damage the reputation of his rival, former state Rep. Mark Ellebracht. Campbell, who has since pleaded guilty to a federal drug charge, claimed Kelley provided the substances and instructed him to break into Ellebrachtโ€™s vehicle. The plot was uncovered after Campbell was arrested in an unrelated drug case and cooperated with investigators.

The case highlights the extreme lengths some candidates may take to gain an edge in competitive primaries. Missouriโ€™s 55th House District race has been contentious, with Ellebracht, a moderate Republican, facing opposition from more conservative factions. Kelley has denied the allegations, calling them a political smear. But the accusations have already cast a shadow over the race, raising questions about ethics and fairness in local politics.

If the allegations are proven, Kelley could face serious legal consequences, including potential charges for conspiracy or tampering. The case also underscores broader concerns about the integrity of elections, particularly in primaries where intra-party rivalry can turn bitter. Investigators are continuing to review evidence, and further charges could follow. The primary election is set for August, leaving little time for the legal process to unfold before voters head to the polls.
