Ceuta residents have called for calm ahead of nationwide migrant protests scheduled for Wednesday night. The Spanish enclave on the African coast, which has seen a surge of arrivals from Morocco, urged local authorities and citizens to keep the streets peaceful as demonstrators march across the country to demand better protection for migrants and stricter border controls.

The call for calm comes after weeks of heightened tension in Ceuta and other Spanish border towns. In late 2023, a new wave of migrants crossed the border fence, many of them seeking asylum or a better life in Europe. The Spanish governmentโ€™s โ€œOperation Safe Passageโ€ has been criticized for its heavy-handed tactics, leading to accusations of human rights abuses. The protests are part of a broader movement that has already taken place in Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, where activists clash with police over the treatment of migrants.

Police in Ceuta have increased patrols and set up temporary checkpoints to monitor the crowds. According to local officials, around 3,000 protesters are expected to gather in front of the city hall, while smaller groups will march through the streets. The Spanish Interior Ministry has pledged to deploy additional officers to prevent violence, citing the recent incident in Melilla where a protest turned into a clash with the police. The protests also coincide with the European Parliamentโ€™s debate on a new migration framework, adding political pressure on the government to address the crisis.

If the calls for calm are not heeded, authorities warn that the protests could spill over into violence, jeopardizing the safety of both migrants and residents. The Spanish government is expected to hold a press conference on Thursday to outline new measures for border control and migrant assistance. The situation in Ceuta remains a flashpoint for the wider European debate on migration policy, human rights, and national security, and the outcome of this weekendโ€™s demonstrations could shape Spainโ€™s approach for years to come.
