A large Swedish study has found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, may cut the risk of psychiatric hospitalisation in people with bipolar disorder by 21%. The research followed almost 15,000 patients across the country, tracking their medication use and hospital admissions over several years.

Semaglutide is best known as a treatment for typeโ€ฏ2 diabetes and a weightโ€‘loss drug sold under the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy. Its possible link to improved mental health comes as doctors and patients look for ways to manage bipolar disorder, a condition that often leads to hospital stays. The study was published this week and adds a new dimension to a drug class that has already seen rapid growth in the health market.

The investigators matched patients who took semaglutide with those who did not, controlling for age, gender, and other health conditions. Those on the drug had a 21โ€ฏpercent lower chance of being admitted to a psychiatric facility. Interestingly, other drugs in the same class of glucagonโ€‘like peptideโ€‘1 (GLPโ€‘1) medicines did not show a similar benefit. Researchers think semaglutide may reduce inflammation and influence brain pathways that help regulate mood, but the exact mechanism remains unclear.

The findings suggest a potential new use for semaglutide, but doctors caution that the drug is not yet approved for bipolar disorder. Further trials will be needed to confirm the benefit and to understand who might gain the most. If confirmed, the result could broaden the therapeutic options for people struggling with mood instability, offering a medication that tackles both metabolic and psychiatric challenges.
