Palestinian parents are increasingly fearful for their children's safety as the new school year begins in al-Mughayyir, a village in the occupied West Bank. On the first day of classes, head-teacher Bassam al-Assaf expressed deep concern, noting that both students and parents are living in fear. This heightened anxiety comes on the heels of a surge in settler-related violence, with six people, including three schoolchildren, killed in the area this year alone.

The climate of violence has escalated, particularly since the tragic shooting of 14-year-old Aws al-Naasan, who was killed by a settler outside the school gates in April. Eyewitness accounts from teachers like Waheed Abu Naem recount horrifying moments when students were forced to hide as bullets struck their school building. Abu Naem spoke of his desperate attempt to protect his students during the attack, recalling the bloodshed and loss that has haunted the community since that day. The Israeli military contended that the shooting was in response to a violent incident involving stones thrown at a vehicle carrying civilians, but investigations into the conduct of the reservist involved are ongoing.

As the new academic year begins, the psychological toll of violence weighs heavily on families. Many parents are reluctant to send their children back to school, with empty desks serving as painful reminders of those who have been lost. The school, which sits at the edge of the village and is surrounded by settler outposts, has implemented several security measures. Al-Assaf has installed barbed wire fencing, reinforced school gates, and arranged for ambulance crews to be stationed nearby. Additionally, some parents have volunteered to remain at the school throughout the day to provide extra protection and reassurance to the children.

The ongoing violence and instability in al-Mughayyir highlight the challenges faced by Palestinian communities in the West Bank. As tensions continue to rise, the impact on education and the well-being of children in these areas becomes increasingly concerning. The situation calls for urgent attention from the international community to ensure the safety and security of innocent lives caught in the crossfire.
