Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said on Thursday that he has lost about 80 pounds after starting a GLPโ€‘1 medication two years ago, the same year he was diagnosed with typeโ€‘2 diabetes. He announced the weight loss during a press conference at the state capitol, noting that the drug helped him control his blood sugar and shed excess weight.

GLPโ€‘1 drugs, originally approved to treat diabetes, have become popular for their ability to promote weight loss. Medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy work by mimicking a gut hormone that slows digestion and reduces appetite. The drugs have sparked a national debate over access and cost, as insurers often label them โ€œweightโ€‘lossโ€ treatments and limit coverage. Diabetes and obesity affect more than a third of Illinois adults, and the governorโ€™s personal experience puts a highโ€‘profile face on a treatment that many lowโ€‘income patients cannot afford.

Pritzker said he began the therapy after his physician recommended it to improve his glucose levels. He described the regimen as a weekly injection combined with diet changes and regular exercise. Health experts praised the governor for being open about his condition, noting that public figures can reduce stigma around diabetes. Critics, however, warned that the drugโ€™s high priceโ€”often exceeding $1,000 a monthโ€”could fuel demand that outstrips supply and strain Medicaid budgets. The governorโ€™s office said the state will study ways to expand coverage for GLPโ€‘1s for qualifying residents.

The announcement could shape Illinois health policy. Pritzker hinted that his own success will inform upcoming legislation aimed at improving access to diabetes treatments and weightโ€‘loss medications. Lawmakers are expected to debate a bill that would require insurers to cover GLPโ€‘1s for patients with medically documented obesity or diabetes. If passed, the measure could make the drugs more affordable for thousands of Illinoisans, potentially lowering rates of diabetes complications and related health costs.
