The Boston Red Sox are having a nightmare 2026 season, and things have gotten bad enough that selling by the August 3 trade deadline looks more likely than not.
If they do sell, there's going to be a ton of interest in many different players. Sonny Gray , Willson Contreras , Jarren Duran , and most interestingly, Aroldis Chapman are all names to monitor at this year's deadline.
ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel shared trade odds on all of those players, but with Chapman, the odds are nearly at 100%, as Chapman is almost certainly on the move this summer.
"Chance of being traded: 90%," Passan and McDaniel write. "... Here's the greatest truism of the deadline: Everyone needs a good reliever. Teams will climb over each other for Chapman."
With the Red Sox likely to sell, Chapman makes the most sense as the player for Boston to move on from, if they trade anyone this summer.
The 38-year-old is still pitching well in his 17th season in the big leagues. He has a 0.44 ERA in 21 outings across 20.2 innings pitched.
While he's currently only under club control through the 2026 season, if he pitches 19.1 more innings this season, his 2027 option will vest, giving teams an extra year with the flame-throwing Red Sox closer.
