RFK Jr. acknowledges Pennsylvania infant's measles death, criticizes Shapiro's response

RFK Jr. accepts PA child died of measles, says Shapiro hastily โ€˜politicizedโ€™ death

Health and Human Services Secretary Robertโ€ฏF. Kennedy Jr. confirmed on Friday that a sixโ€‘weekโ€‘old baby in Pennsylvania died of measles, after he had previously questioned the stateโ€™s reporting of two measlesโ€‘related deaths amid a growing outbreak. He also said former Senator and Fox News host Rushโ€ฏShapiro had rushed to politicise the death. Kennedyโ€™s admission came after Lancaster County coroner Stephenโ€ฏDiamantoni released a death certificate that named measles as the cause of death. The babyโ€™s parents were not vaccinated, a fact that the coroner noted in the report. Kennedy said Shapiroโ€™s comments โ€œhastily politicisedโ€ a tragic event that should be treated as a public health issue, not a political one.

The outbreak has hit Pennsylvania hard. Since early 2023, the state has reported more than 300 confirmed measles cases and 10 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vaccination rates in some counties have fallen below the 95โ€ฏ% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. The decline is linked to a rise in vaccineโ€‘hesitant communities, a trend that has been amplified by socialโ€‘media misinformation. Kennedy, who has long opposed the measlesโ€‘mumpsโ€‘rubella vaccine, was one of the few officials to question the stateโ€™s data early in the outbreak. His stance has drawn criticism from publicโ€‘health experts who say that denial of measles deaths can delay response efforts.

Diamantoniโ€™s confirmation was the first official acknowledgment of a measles death in Pennsylvania in more than a decade. The coronerโ€™s office said the infantโ€™s symptoms began three days before death and that no other underlying conditions were found. The stateโ€™s Department of Health has since increased outreach to communities with low vaccination rates, offering free shots at local clinics. Shapiroโ€™s comments, which called the death โ€œa tragedy that should not be used for political gain,โ€ were met with backlash from both sides of the political spectrum. The CDC has urged that any outbreak be addressed with science, not politics, citing the risk of further spread.

The next step for Pennsylvania is a comprehensive review of its vaccination program and a push to raise coverage to 95โ€ฏ%. The state has announced a new mobileโ€‘clinic initiative that will target rural and underserved areas. Health officials plan to monitor the situation closely and may consider legal action if vaccineโ€‘hesitant groups continue to spread misinformation. The incident underscores the danger of politicising publicโ€‘health data and highlights the need for transparent reporting. If Pennsylvania can turn the tide on measles, it may set a precedent for other states grappling with vaccine hesitancy.
