Novaya Gazeta announced on Tuesday that it will cease publishing, saying the decision comes after years of intimidation, arrests and the murder of six of its journalists, including Annaโ€ฏPolitkovskaya, who was killed in 2006. The newspaperโ€™s editorial board said the governmentโ€™s relentless pressure finally forced the paper to โ€œclose its doors for good.โ€ The closure marks the end of Russiaโ€™s most prominent investigative outlet.

Novaya Gazeta has been the countryโ€™s leading source of inโ€‘depth reporting on corruption, human rights abuses and the war in Ukraine. Since its founding in 1993, the paper has exposed graft in the Kremlin, documented war crimes in Chechnya and reported on the treatment of political dissidents. Its journalists have faced repeated threats. Six reporters have been assassinated, most notably Politkovskaya, who was shot dead for her coverage of the Chechen conflict. Over the past decade, the newspaper has been labeled a โ€œforeign agentโ€ and a โ€œterrorist organization,โ€ restricting its ability to receive funding and to operate openly.

The final blow came after a series of raids and arrests in 2023 and 2024. Security services detained the editorโ€‘inโ€‘chief and several reporters on charges of โ€œextremist activityโ€ linked to their reporting on the Ukraine war. The paperโ€™s bank accounts were frozen, and advertisers withdrew under pressure. In a statement, the Committee to Protect Journalists said the crackdown โ€œsignals a decisive move to silence independent voices.โ€ Reporters Without Borders called the closure โ€œa tragic loss for press freedom in Russia.โ€ The staff, many of whom are now facing criminal trials, say the state has succeeded in โ€œkilling offโ€ the newspaper that once dared to challenge power.

The shutdown leaves a void in Russiaโ€™s media landscape. Remaining independent outlets are likely to go further underground or operate from exile. International NGOs have pledged legal aid for the detained journalists and are urging Western governments to impose sanctions on officials involved in the repression. The loss of Novaya Gazeta also raises concerns about the flow of reliable information from Russia, especially about the ongoing war in Ukraine. Observers warn that without a strong investigative press, corruption and abuses may go unchecked, further eroding any remaining space for dissent in the country.
