US spot bitcoin exchangeโ€‘traded funds lost $643โ€ฏmillion on Friday, the biggest singleโ€‘day outflow since Juneโ€ฏ25, after Thursdayโ€™s Binance hack sent shockwaves through the crypto market. The withdrawals were recorded across the eight SECโ€‘approved spot bitcoin ETFs, wiping out roughly 2.5โ€ฏ% of the total assets these funds hold.

The Binance breach, disclosed on Juneโ€ฏ1, involved hackers gaining access to the exchangeโ€™s hot wallets and siphoning off an estimated $200โ€ฏmillion worth of crypto. The incident reignited fears that even the most regulated crypto platforms are vulnerable, prompting investors to reassess exposure to digital assets. Spot bitcoin ETFs, launched in January after a long regulatory battle, had been a barometer of mainstream confidence in the nascent market.

Industry analysts said the outflow reflects a shortโ€‘term riskโ€‘off reaction rather than a fundamental loss of faith in the products. Fidelityโ€™s crypto chief noted that โ€œthe hack reminded investors that custodial risk remains a key concern,โ€ while a Bloomberg survey showed 38โ€ฏ% of ETF investors considered moving to futuresโ€‘based funds or traditional equities. Despite the pullโ€‘back, the eight ETFs still manage about $15โ€ฏbillion, a level that dwarfs the $2โ€ฏbillion in assets that fled after the 2022 collapse of the Terra ecosystem.

The next few weeks will test whether the outflow is a fleeting spike or the start of a broader retreat. If further security incidents emerge, regulators may tighten oversight of custodial practices, potentially slowing new inflows. Conversely, a swift resolution at Binance and reassuring statements from fund managers could stem the tide and restore confidence. For now, the $643โ€ฏmillion drain serves as a reminder that cryptoโ€™s integration into mainstream finance still hinges on robust security and clear regulatory guidance.
