Smart glasses are moving from prototype labs to storefront shelves, and privacy advocates say the rollout is prompting a new wave of covert surveillance. In the past month, major manufacturers such as Meta and Rayโ€‘Ban have released consumerโ€‘grade eyewear that can record video, stream audio, and display augmented reality content, while app developers have launched tools that claim to detect nearby AIโ€‘enabled lenses. The rapid emergence of these devices is forcing the public to learn how to spot them before they become a hidden threat.

The surge in demand reflects a broader trend toward wearable tech that blends fashion with function. Consumers want handsโ€‘free navigation, live translation and realโ€‘time notifications, and manufacturers are eager to meet that appetite. At the same time, lawmakers and privacy groups are tightening scrutiny of public recording, especially after highโ€‘profile incidents of unconsented filming in public spaces. That clash of convenience and concern is why experts are now publishing checklists for ordinary people to recognize when someone may be using AI glasses.

Physical clues are the most reliable first line of defense. Most smart glasses have thicker frames around the temples and the outer edges of the lenses to house batteries, cameras and microphones. A tiny LED often flashes when recording, though lowโ€‘cost knockโ€‘offs sold on platforms like TikTok Shop and Temu may omit that light. Users may also see the wearer repeatedly tap the temples, glance at a tiny display, or whisper voice commandsโ€”behaviors that suggest interaction with an onโ€‘board processor. New apps such as Nearby Glasses and ZuckOff scan for Bluetooth signals and device identifiers linked to AI eyewear, but they can miss glasses with Bluetooth turned off and may generate false alarms.

If you suspect someone is recording you with smart glasses, the advice is to distance yourself and, if you feel threatened, alert authorities. Moving away reduces the chance of being captured, and a report can trigger an investigation into illegal surveillance. As the market for AIโ€‘enabled eyewear expands, the ability to recognize these devices will become a practical skill for protecting personal privacy.
