President Donald Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn on Monday that he is “looking at” firing Kimberly Guilfoyle, whom he referred to as the U.S. ambassador to Greece, and added that “we’re not happy.” The comment came during a brief press encounter with The Hill after the outlet reported the president was considering the move.

The claim sparked immediate confusion because there is no record of Guilfoyle ever being appointed to a diplomatic post. The U.S. ambassador to Greece is a career foreign‑service officer, currently George Tsounis, who was confirmed by the Senate in 2022. Guilfoyle, a former television host and former daughter‑in‑law of former President Trump, has never held a government position. The Wall Street Journal’s earlier story about a request she allegedly made to the president appears to have been mischaracterized, and no official paperwork or nomination has been filed for her to serve in Greece.

White House press secretary Karine Jean‑Pierre declined to comment on the specifics, saying only that the administration “will address any personnel matters in accordance with established procedures.” Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle seized on the slip. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul called the remark “misleading,” while Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal urged the White House to correct the record and ensure transparency about diplomatic appointments.

If the president’s statement was a misstatement, the White House is likely to issue a clarification to avoid further confusion and potential diplomatic fallout. The episode underscores the heightened scrutiny of Trump’s personnel decisions as he prepares for a possible 2024 campaign run, and it may prompt additional fact‑checking from media outlets and watchdog groups.
