President Donald Trump's new 100% tariff on imported drones will nearly double the cost of most models overnight, U.S. retailers and industry groups warn, as the move risks crippling a fast-growing market that relies almost entirely on foreign-made products.

The tariff, announced late Friday under emergency powers aimed at protecting national security, arrives just as drone sales are surgingโ€”both for consumer use and in critical industries like agriculture, real estate, and emergency response. More than 80% of drones sold in the U.S. come from China, including popular models from DJI, the Shenzhen-based company that dominates the global market. Analysts say no U.S. manufacturer currently produces a comparable consumer or commercial drone at scale, leaving buyers with no affordable alternatives.

The sudden price shock threatens to stall growth in a sector that has expanded rapidly over the past five years, with sales expected to top $1 billion in 2024. Retailers like Best Buy and Amazon have already begun pulling lower-cost drones from their shelves, citing unworkable margins under the new tariff. Industry groups including the Consumer Technology Association and the Drone Manufacturers Alliance have condemned the move, calling it a misguided attempt to address national security concerns through blunt economic measures. โ€œThis isnโ€™t about security,โ€ said a CTA spokesperson. โ€œItโ€™s about making drones unaffordable for the average American.โ€

Critics warn the policy could backfire, pushing consumers and businesses toward gray-market imports or outdated technology. Some analysts predict a wave of small businesses that use drones for inspections, mapping, and deliveries will scale back operations, while hobbyists may simply stop flying. The administration has offered no timeline for easing the tariff or for supporting domestic drone production, leaving the industry in limbo. Without a clear path to cheaper alternatives, the 100% levy risks turning a high-tech success story into collateral damage in a trade war with no end in sight.
