Ukrainian soldiers are finding deceptive uses for their unjammable fiber-optic drones as ambush tactics spread

Ukrainian soldiers are using fiber‑optic drones to study Russian bunkers and shape attacks, and are also finding deceptive uses for them as ambush tactics spread. The drones are small, cheap and run on fiber‑optic cables, making them immune to Russian jamming. Ukrainian forces can fly them over enemy positions, capture high‑resolution images and feed the data to artillery crews.

The move matters because Russia has been using powerful electronic warfare to blind Ukrainian drones and satellites. By switching to fiber‑optic links, Ukrainian troops keep their surveillance feeds alive even when Russian jamming is in full force. The new drones also give commanders a better picture of underground fortifications, which are a key part of Russia’s defensive strategy in eastern Ukraine.

Soldiers say the drones are not just for reconnaissance. They are being used as decoys. A drone can be flown in a pattern that looks like a real attack, drawing Russian troops into a predetermined kill zone. Once the enemy moves to intercept, Ukrainian infantry can strike from cover. The tactic turns the enemy’s own technology against them and keeps Russian forces guessing.

What comes next is a race of counter‑measures. Ukrainian command is training crews to fly the drones in tighter formations and to use them for short‑range strikes. NATO is reportedly looking at supplying more advanced unmanned aircraft that can carry heavier payloads. If the tactic proves successful, it could spread to other conflicts where drones are used for both intelligence and deception. The war on the eastern front remains a high‑stakes game of technology and tactics.
