Two U.S. envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are scheduled to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday following talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The discussions, which took place on Saturday, focused on developing plans to help end the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to U.S. officials.

This diplomatic mission is significant as it marks the first visit by top negotiators from former President Donald Trump’s administration to Ukraine's capital. The urgency of the talks comes amid a recent escalation in aerial attacks by both Russia and Ukraine. In a positive development, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed to a temporary halt of strikes on each other's capitals for three days, creating a window for potential negotiations.

Details from the Moscow discussions remain sparse, but both sides have expressed optimism about the outcomes. Russian adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as "constructive" and highlighted that they went beyond the immediate issues of the conflict to include discussions on economic cooperation and mutually beneficial projects between Russia and the U.S. However, the backdrop of intensified missile and drone strikes continues to loom over negotiations. Ukraine has reported difficulties in repelling these attacks, citing a shortage of interceptor missiles while targeting key Russian economic infrastructure.

As Witkoff and Kushner prepare to travel to Kyiv, questions linger about the logistics of their journey, given Ukraine's airspace has been closed since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The next steps in the negotiations could be crucial, as both nations seek to address the root causes of the conflict and explore pathways to peace amid ongoing violence.
