Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado stepped back onto Venezuelan soil on Sunday, ending a ten‑month exile that began after a brief detention in January 2025. She arrived first in Barquisimeto, where she was greeted by worshippers at the Church of Santa Rosa in Lara state, then drove to Caracas to a crowd of cheering supporters who swarmed her car. Machado posted on X, “I’m here, with you all,” confirming her presence and signaling a new chapter for the opposition movement.

Her return comes as the country grapples with a power vacuum created after U.S. forces captured former president Nicolás Maduro in January, leaving interim president Delcy Rodríguez in charge. Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate recognized in December for her non‑violent challenge to Maduro’s rule, fled Venezuela in late 2025 after a clandestine escape from a brief detention. She spent months in Norway, where she accepted the prize, before moving to a series of safe houses in Europe. The timing of her homecoming aligns with U.S.‑backed reconciliation talks that Washington hopes will pave the way for free and fair elections, a condition the Trump administration insists must be met before it offers direct support to the opposition.

Opposition figures hailed the move as a turning point. Edmundo González, who ran against Maduro in the disputed 2024 election, called Machado’s return “a very important day for Venezuelans” on X, saying the opposition’s “sovereign voice” was back to guide the process. González Urrutia, currently in exile in Spain, promised to join her soon to push the country toward freedom. In Washington, President Trump said he knew nothing about the return, describing Machado as “a very nice woman” who had given him her Nobel Prize, and expressed hope for her safety. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement linking her arrival to U.S.‑supported talks, urging all Venezuelan political actors to respect freedoms and back the negotiations that could deliver the country’s first free election in thirty years. The next weeks will test whether Machado’s presence can galvanize opposition forces and pressure the interim government toward a credible electoral timetable.
