The assembly is already facing internal issues, highlighted by a water leak that left SDLP MLA Colin McGrath's office in disrepair, a metaphor for the larger problems confronting Northern Ireland's government.

As Stormont prepares to reconvene, the backdrop is a looming election scheduled for May 2024. This deadline has intensified political activity among the parties, with Sinn Fรฉin recently appointing Paul Boggs as the new West Tyrone MLA, filling the vacancy left by Maoliosa McHugh. Since the last assembly election, 14 MLAs have been co-opted, and more appointments may occur as parties gear up for the electoral battle.

Financial pressures are mounting, particularly in health and education sectors. Newly appointed Health Minister Robbie Butler faces scrutiny as the 10-year anniversary of the Bengoa report approaches, a key health reform review. Butler and his colleagues have expressed frustration over the lack of a budget, which has hindered their ability to address critical issues.
