The final prayer of Yomโ€ฏKippur, recited at the closing of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, stresses the need to repair human relationships, religious leaders said on Sunday, citing the ancient liturgy that ends with a plea to โ€œsettle all disputes among us.โ€ The emphasis appears in the Neโ€™ilah service, the last of the dayโ€™s prayers, and in the concluding Selichot, which ask God to forgive sins only after people have made amends with one another.

The focus reflects a longโ€‘standing theme of the High Holidays: that justice before God begins with justice among people. In the biblical narrative, the Day of Atonement is linked to the command โ€œLove your neighbor as yourself,โ€ and rabbinic commentary has repeatedly warned that a confession without reconciliation is incomplete. Modern scholars note that the holidayโ€™s structureโ€”ten days of reflection, confession, and a final sealing of the divine decreeโ€”mirrors a social contract, urging communities to resolve grudges before the year ends.

Rabbis across the United States and Israel highlighted that the prayerโ€™s wording is not symbolic but practical. Rabbi Miriam Berger of New Yorkโ€™s Congregation Bโ€™nai Shalom told the Religion News Service that the Neโ€™ilahโ€™s call to โ€œsettle all disputesโ€ prompts congregants to call estranged family members, settle business disagreements, and seek forgiveness before the shofar sounds. A 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 68โ€ฏ% of American Jews consider repairing broken relationships a central part of their Yomโ€ฏKippur observance, up from 53โ€ฏ% a decade earlier. Synagogues are now offering โ€œreconciliation workshopsโ€ in the days leading up to the holiday, and many chaplains encourage patients in hospitals to use the period for personal peaceโ€‘making.

The prayerโ€™s message is set to shape the coming yearโ€™s communal dynamics. Leaders expect a surge in mediation services and an increase in charitable giving tied to forgiveness initiatives. As the shofarโ€™s final blast fades, the hope is that the resolve to mend ties will carry into everyday life, reinforcing the idea that spiritual renewal is inseparable from social harmony.
