YouTube has rolled out a new feature that ties its TV and mobile apps together, letting viewers use their phones as a remote control while keeping the video playing on the big screen. The update works even when both devices aren’t on the same Wi-Fi network, as long as they’re signed into the same YouTube account. Once connected, the phone automatically detects what’s playing on the TV and shows a companion panel with options to like, comment, subscribe, or read the video description without interrupting playback.

The change solves a common frustration when watching YouTube on a TV. Typing searches, scrolling through comments, or switching videos is easier on a phone, but pausing the TV disrupts the group experience. Now, viewers can search for new videos on their phones while the current one keeps playing. They can also browse YouTube Shorts or look up related content without taking over the TV. When something new is ready to watch, sending it to the TV takes just one tap—just choose “Play on different device” from the three-dot menu.

The companion panel isn’t locked in place once it appears. Users can keep using the YouTube app normally, and the panel stays accessible by tapping the devices icon on the Home tab whenever they need to take control again. This split-screen approach lets each device do what it does best: the TV handles the video and sound, while the phone handles search, typing, and interaction. Early users say it feels like a natural way to watch together without the usual back-and-forth of handing a remote around.

The update isn’t flashy, but it addresses a problem that’s been quietly annoying YouTube TV viewers for years. By letting phones and TVs work in sync, YouTube is making the experience smoother and more social. It’s a small change that could save time, reduce frustration, and keep group viewing sessions flowing without the constant interruptions of pausing to search or type.
