Cornell responds to Jane Doeโ€™s letter saying she felt โ€˜unsupportedโ€™ by university president

Jane Doe, a former Cornell student who accused seven men of raping her in a fraternity house, sent a letter to President Michael Kotlikoff saying she felt โ€œunsupported and disbelievedโ€ by the university, and Cornell has now issued a written response that the school obtained through a Newโ€ฏYorkโ€ฏTimes request.

The letter arrives amid a wave of campus sexualโ€‘assault cases that have drawn national scrutiny to how Ivy League schools handle Titleโ€ฏIX complaints. Cornellโ€™s own Titleโ€ฏIX office was placed under a federal audit last year after critics said its investigations were too slow and opaque. The university has faced pressure from lawmakers and advocacy groups to overhaul its processes and to provide clearer support for survivors.

In its reply, Cornellโ€™s Office of the President said it โ€œtakes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriouslyโ€ and that it has already taken steps to review the handling of Doeโ€™s case. The statement noted that the universityโ€™s Titleโ€ฏIX investigators had followed protocol, that a formal grievance had been filed, and that the alleged perpetrators were suspended pending a campusโ€‘wide investigation. Cornell also pledged to meet with Doeโ€™s legal counsel, to offer counseling services, and to consider policy revisions suggested by an independent advisory panel.

The response does not resolve the dispute, and Doeโ€™s attorneys say they will assess whether the universityโ€™s actions meet the standards set by federal law. Cornell has scheduled a townโ€‘hall meeting for students and staff next week to discuss the case and broader Titleโ€ฏIX reforms. Lawmakers have signaled they will monitor the universityโ€™s compliance with federal guidelines, and the outcome could influence how other elite schools address sexualโ€‘assault allegations.
