U.S. power output rose 2.1โ€ฏ% in the first half of the year, with Texas, California and Newโ€ฏYork leading the surge. The jump follows a sharp rise in dataโ€‘center use, as cloud services and artificialโ€‘intelligence workloads grow faster than ever. Stateโ€‘level power plants increased their output to meet the higher demand, pushing overall generation higher than in the same period last year.

The increase matters because it shows how digital services are reshaping the energy market. More data centers mean more electricity needed at times of day that are already hard for the grid. The trend also highlights the challenge of keeping the system reliable while meeting climate goals. If power plants rely on fossil fuels, the extra output can add greenhouseโ€‘gas emissions. If they switch to renewables, the system can grow greener.

Texas added about 5.6โ€ฏ% more megawattโ€‘hours than in 2025, California grew 4.2โ€ฏ%, and Newโ€ฏYork added 3.1โ€ฏ%. Natural gas remains the biggest source of the added output, but wind and solar also expanded. Grid operators in these states reported higher peak loads and more frequent balancing operations. Regulators are watching the data closely to decide whether new capacity or upgrades are needed.

Next steps involve grid upgrades and policy reviews. State utilities plan to add more transmission lines and storage to handle the new peaks. The federal government is considering incentives for renewable projects that can replace fossilโ€‘fuel generation. Meanwhile, the power industry is studying how to keep the grid stable while meeting the growing digital demand.
