About the Buddhist Texts in This Database
📜 Pali Canon (Tipitaka)
The Pali Canon is the scriptural foundation of Theravada Buddhism, containing the Vinaya Pitaka (monastic rules), Sutta Pitaka (discourses), and Abhidhamma Pitaka (philosophical analysis). The Sutta Pitaka alone contains five Nikayas: Digha (long discourses), Majjhima (middle-length), Samyutta (connected), Anguttara (numerical), and Khuddaka (minor collection including the beloved Dhammapada and Sutta Nipata).
💎 Mahayana Sutras
Mahayana scriptures include the Prajnaparamita ("Perfection of Wisdom") collection including the Heart Sutra and Diamond Sutra, the Lotus Sutra (Saddharmapundarika), the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland), the Lankavatara Sutra, and the Pure Land sutras. These texts emphasize the Bodhisattva path and Buddha-nature (tathagatagarbha).
🧘 Zen & Chan Texts
Zen literature includes the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch (Huineng), the Blue Cliff Record (Biyanlu), the Gateless Gate (Mumonkan), Dogen's Shobogenzo, and the writings of masters like Huang Po, Linji, Hakuin, and Bankei. Zen teaches "direct pointing to the mind" and sudden awakening beyond conceptual frameworks.
🏔️ Vajrayana & Tibetan Texts
Tibetan Buddhist literature includes the Tibetan Book of the Dead (Bardo Thodol), the Bodhicaryavatara (Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life by Shantideva), Milarepa's Songs, Longchenpa's works, Je Tsongkhapa's Lam Rim Chenmo, and the extensive tantric literature of the Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelug schools.
