📚 Understanding the Talmud
The Talmud is the central text of Rabbinic Judaism — a vast ocean of law, ethics, stories, and debate compiled over centuries.
📖 Talmud Bavli vs Yerushalmi
The Babylonian Talmud (Bavli), completed around 500 CE, is the more widely studied version with over 2,700 pages. The Jerusalem Talmud (Yerushalmi) was completed around 400 CE in the Land of Israel. Both contain the Mishnah plus the rabbinic Gemara commentary.
⚖️ Mishnah & Gemara
The Mishnah (compiled ~200 CE by Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi) is the first written version of the Jewish oral law, organized into 6 orders (Sedarim) and 63 tractates. The Gemara is the rabbinic discussion and debate on each Mishnaic passage, forming the bulk of the Talmud.
🌍 How to Study Talmud
Many Jews follow the Daf Yomi cycle — learning one page (daf) of Talmud per day — completing all 2,711 pages in 7.5 years. The current Daf Yomi cycle began in January 2020 and will complete in 2028. This tool helps you find relevant passages by topic.
