What Is Base64?

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme representing binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters — A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /. It makes binary content safe to transmit over text-only protocols like email, HTTP headers, and JSON.

Developed for MIME email encoding, Base64 is now fundamental to the web — used in data URIs, JWT tokens, HTTP Basic Auth, and API file transfers. The trade-off is a ~33% size increase, acceptable for compatibility.

Common Use Cases

Data URIs — embed images in HTML/CSS as data:image/png;base64,…
JWT Tokens — JSON Web Token headers and payloads are Base64URL encoded
Email Attachments — MIME encodes binary attachments as Base64 for email transport
REST APIs — send binary files through JSON APIs as Base64 strings
HTTP Basic Auth — credentials are Base64-encoded in the Authorization header

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about Base64 encoding, decoding, and this tool

What is Base64 encoding and why is it used?
Base64 converts binary data into a string of 64 safe ASCII characters. It exists because many protocols — email, HTTP headers, HTML attributes, JSON — are designed for text and cannot safely carry raw binary bytes. Base64 makes any binary content transportable as plain text, at a ~33% size overhead.
Is Base64 encoding a form of encryption?
No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption. It is trivially reversible by anyone — there is no key and no security. Anyone who sees your Base64 string can decode it instantly. Never use Base64 to hide sensitive data; use proper encryption (AES, RSA) for that purpose.
What is the difference between Base64 and URL-safe Base64?
Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meaning in URLs. URL-safe Base64 replaces + with - and / with _, making it safe to include in URLs without percent-encoding. JWT tokens use URL-safe Base64. They are otherwise identical.
How much larger does Base64 make my data?
Base64 encoding increases data size by approximately 33% — every 3 bytes of input become 4 characters of output. A 1 MB image encodes to about 1.37 MB of Base64 text. This overhead is the trade-off for universal text compatibility.
Does my file get uploaded to AZRS servers?
Your text and files are processed to generate results but are not permanently stored or shared. AZRS Corp does not retain, log, or redistribute your uploaded content.
Can I embed a Base64-encoded image directly in HTML?
Yes — encode your image file using this tool, then use the result as: <img src="data:image/png;base64,YOUR_STRING">. This embeds the image without a separate HTTP request, useful for small icons in email templates or offline-capable pages.
